Kilcronan Housing Development

Project: Kilcronan Housing Development
Client: South Dublin County Council
Architect: Gerry Cahill Architects
Address: Clondalkin, Dublin 22
Description: This project comprised the construction of a residential development consisting of 53 dwellings ranging in height from single to three storeys, a community centre together with associated drainage and 3m high masonry boundary walls on an infill brownfield site. The land was notorious for anti-social behaviour and the client wanted a modern aesthetically pleasing development that would serve as a catalyst towards the eventual improvement of the wider area. The dwellings were of conventional masonry construction with timber / precast concrete flooring and pitched timber roofs. Cantilever balconies and steel frame entrance canopies were common features throughout the design. The project was furthermore complicated by high voltage power lines traversing the site with pylon towers on one side. A large trunk sewer also traversed the site, which remained live during construction and provision had to be made in the foundation design to allow the council to make future upgrades to the sewer without compromising the stability of the new development.
The project also received commendation in the 2009 Opus Architectural and Construction Awards.
